Shot 1 - is a full CG scene. The modeling, texturing, lighting, and animation were done in Maya. I created a studio lighting setup using mental ray area lights and "bounce cards". For the smoke I used Maya fluid effects with dynamic fields, and composited the effects in with Shake. The Avatar trailer was just used for display reference.
Shot 2 - is a match to live composite I did. The modeling, texturing, lighting, animation, and render layers were done in Maya. I used traditional lighting for this scene. The final composite was done in Shake. The live action background plate was shot with a Sony HVX 200.
Shot 3 - is a full CG scene. I used a Maya curve flow with a particle instance. I used traditional lighting and an environment map for the reflections.
Shot 4 - is a match to live composite I did. The modeling, texturing, lighting, animation, and render layers were done in Maya. I lused traditional lighting for this scene. The final composite was done in Shake.
Shot 5 - is a full CG scene. The police SUV was a model I downloaded from Turbosquid.com. I modelled the book bag in Z-Brush. The rest of the scene was modelled, textured, and lit in Maya. I used a combination of lighting techniques, including a base colored ambient occlusion to set the overall night mood.
Shot 6 - is a full CG scene. The mirror like boxes are animated with Maya nCloth. I used Maya fluid effects for the inky smoke.
